The Handwoven Spindle Bag

Way back in June I made up a bunch of fabric pieces, cords and straps as part of a fun weaving adventure to try and make as many parts as possible from one group of weaving cottons. This was the assortment:

After a few months and many projects later, it was time to revisit this series of pieces…

And, the thing that got me started on this whole project was this woven beaded strap made while living in Seattle. While cleaning my desk drawers looking for my pencil sharpener, this turned up buried way back in the bottom drawer. The colors reminded me of the woven fabric, and I wondered if it would work? (It didn’t.)

Since the beaded strap didn’t work for inspiration, I chose something else that was at hand: my Bosworth drop spindle. With the return of winter, it’s time to revive my Sunday Spinning while at the laundromat. It was time for a handwoven spindle bag!

One of the most fun things about this bag is the variety of woven textures all made from the same three colors.

Now I’m ready to head over to the laundromat with my drop spindle and fiber for a solid 90 minutes of spinning!

Pretty — did you get many comments on how nice the bag is? I’m sure they remember the drop spindling from last year :)

This is so neat….but some more details–is the spindle only sticking out for the pic, do you have enough room for 2 or 4 oz of fiber, did you line the bag, where is the fancy button for the closure to name a few!

It’s great that you must be feeling fine again!!

I remember that fabric and it’s good to see it again! I’m going to be dyeing on Sunday (very unusual for me), and some of my colors might be like the colors in that fabric. So it’s good to see what a master can do with them!

I’ve been thinking of mixing the dyes to try to make some muted colors for my sunroom, but if I have a lot of trouble doing that, I know I could make some towels in colors like yours….and I love weaving towels!!

If I were a spinner, I’d have more “amazing bag” and “beautiful spindle” things to say!!

Love the bag, love the colours in the fabric, and is that a Bosworth spindle? It looks a bit like one I have.

Isn’t it great how all good bits of handwoven fabric have uses? I sewed a discarded scrap into a pocket to carry a bunch of keys and now it gets used every day. Just shows it doesn’t matter if you weave cloth without knowing exactly what you will use it for, good cloth is always going to be useful.

I love the textures in this bag! Does the spindle stay in securely? Have you decided what you’re going to do with the linen yarn yet?

Too awesome! I take it that this means that you are feeling better? Welcome back to the world of the living!
And I love that you are the kind of guy that just happens to “find” a beaded strap like THAT shoved to the back of a drawer!

I’ll wager the bag will get comments wherever you happen to have it out and about. Very handy.

How well does the spindle (a bossie, I see) stay in it’s little pocket?

    Love the bag!

Yes, please show the bag being carried so we can better visualize that spindle pocket in use. It’s just awesome, Dave. All those fine finishing details blow me away!

I have to admit I love the bag with all its fabric variations. It’s the kind of thing I tend to stalk people to get a closer look at. It’s a good thing for you I don’t live anywhere near Boston! Happy spindling!!

Very nice! I would say to have fun at the laundromat but I think that is not possible at that location.
