This past weekend I had the pleasure/honor of being a tour guide for the visiting Susan of KitKatKnit fame and her husband Dave. They were in town to visit their son over the river at MIT in Cambridge. Their visit has been in the plans for a long, long time, and it was exciting to finally be able to meet her in person after all these years.
The morning started out like any typical autumn morning in Boston, with lots of low clouds and fog. Even though it was Halloween morning, and from the west coast time zone, they were able to be up and out early to meet for breakfast.

After a plentiful breakfast filled with lots of chatting, it was time to drag them around town go for a walk around town to see some of the more local scenery such as brownstones and autumn colors. And here’s the lovely couple now, stopping for a romantic photo.

One of the fun things for me when playing tour guide, is that I really do find things I’ve never seen before. This building is one example. For the thousands of times I’ve walked down this street, this building has eluded me. The top floor detail was just amazing.

But, even more interesting, was the Green Man’s face at the very top. Very VERY interesting to see.

And, they also got to watch me doing the AssWatch thing. (I mean, really, how could I help myself???)

There were two things of interest to see. First up were the local pigeons. They’ve been the inspiration for more than one hand dyed yarn in the past for me.

And, the other thing Susan wanted to see were the friendly Boston squirrels. While walking through the Boston Public Garden, she was commenting on how there were no squirrels to be seen. So, I crouched down, held out my hand and made a little kissing sound, and they came running. They know people bring food, so it’s a sure way to get them over. Alas, we had no treats for them.

As the fog and clouds burned off, the Boston Public Garden took on a new life, glowing with the colors of autumn. These are a few of my favorite photographs from the walk.

When we made it through the Boston Public Garden and the Boston Common, we were surprised to see it alive and bustling with people.

People wearing nice jeans.

With a nice scarf that brought out his…eyes. Yes…

Ahem… so, anyway, I took them to Windsor Button for a poke around the this fun shop. They also got to meet Susan and Stan, the owners. I got some nice linen to make either a nice towel for myself. I thought it was time for that little project. Photos and details of the yarn in a later post.
Our time together was limited, so I forced them took them on a subway ride out to Brookline to also see A Good Yarn, my favorite local yarn shop. Susan scored a couple of skeins for a scarf, and I got some, too. Meanwhile, Dave was hunting through the patterns and books in search of a vest pattern that he didn’t already have. Seems like he has them ALL!
From there, it was just two stops on the subway to take them to THIS famous hangout:

Leaving the subway, we headed out for a nice long walk. These guys just happen to walk into the camera frame as I was taking a hot of the…tunnel. Subway tunnel. Right.

We walked around for a while, took a stop by the apartment for a look at the new loom, had a spicy Bloody Mary, and more walking. In the early afternoon, we said our goodbyes as I saw them off on the subway to take them back to Cambridge. They had plans to visit some old boat down on the waterfront.

So, walking home from the subway, I found myself taking a few final shots of this glorious day.

Fun was had by us all, and I really hope they like my version of their travelogue.

We love your version of the travelogue, all your pictures and wait a minute. How did I miss those two guys in the tunnel? Your tour guiding made for a perfect day for us and we really appreciated it. Pencil in the Black Sheep Gathering for 2010! And our door is always open to you. Thanks again for everything.

You’re quite the tour guide!
Susan and Dave had one of our finest citizens showing them around.
What a nice way to enjoy Halloween day, especially with the bonus warm weather.
I particularly enjoyed the Red Sox sign. Where is that?

Oh, I haven’t been to that store yet! And, doesn’t Brookline have some Kosher Delis? It seems that’s where Scarlett and I went on one of our trips

Ah, it’s been too long since there was an AWW post.
That first Boston Garden picture is amazing!

Ditto what Chris said. I loved those Boston Public Garden photos. We just do not get color change like that in Calif except in the Sierras. What a nice way to spend your Halloween Day, for you all.

I’m in awe of your park shots… wow.
And yeah. The rest of your photos are pretty damned good looking too, if I do say so myself.

Really great photos; the building with the Green Man is very cool.
But on Asswatch, I just have to say–baggy jeans? Where’s the point/fun in that? The Levi’s shot: Now yer talking. It just makes good sense.

You are such a gracious host in such a beautiful place.
I have been sick for a few weeks, and at the worst point, when I was unable to eat and getting a little depressed, I looked through your posts that I had missed, and the potpourri one, with the beautiful citrus, actually looked so good, it made me feel better! (I was glad that wasn’t when you showed the mouse). So thank you, Dave, for all your generousity. And inspiration. And creative GENIOUS.

How delightful to see and hear about your visit. Susan and Knitting Husband are two of my most favorite people. I don’t think there’s a person alive who Susan wouldn’t walk up to and become friends with. Thank you for some happy shots, it’s cold and dismal here without a cute hiney in sight.

I have always enjoyed my visits to Boston, though it has been way too long since I’ve been there. Oh, and soccer boys have ALWAYS been “my type.” And I guess baseball players too, since that’s what Hubster was!

Awe…look at the adorable cub playing with the ball. The trees are nice too.
