The other morning, while out for a walk, I spotted this large group of geese crossing the street, right in the middle of traffic. They were heading from the little waterway to the grassy area to rest for a spell. It was so cute to see the personalities of each of the birds. (As much as I hate the droppings and mess that they make.) But they are cute.

Oh dear, I do love adolescent geese! They look SO teenaged! Downy, gawky, cranky, awkward. And the parents – nag, nag, nag! But in a few weeks, those half-finished teens will be fully fledged adults. What wonderful, wonderful photos! Thank you, Dave!

It’s really, really hard to believe that they were a threatened species 40 years ago, isn’t it? Thank Rochester, Minnesota (where I grew up) that they’ve recovered…

Here in upstate NY we have lots of geese that no longer migrate. Several state parks now employ border collies to herd them away from public areas and golf courses. That first picture is really terrific!

Aren’t the ducks jealous?

Yeah, annoying and aggressive pests. Love them from afar, though, and what a GREAT picture!

I had the exact same experience yesterday–it was so cool to see the adults organizing all the younger ones! They went across in two teams in the group I saw. First went a mother with all the young ones, then another goose led a bunch that seemed much older. They were so deliberate!
