Handweaver’s Swap

Yes, you read that right: Weaver’s Swap. It’s true.

As if there weren’t enough going on already with the Summer of Spinning, why not start up something about weaving?

In an email exchange with Benita (Of Basically Benita fame), we got to thinking that it would be fun to have a little something creative and inspiring for the summer.

So, this is what we came up with:

Weaver’s Swap – The Rulez

Weave up two yards minimum in cotton (since some people allergic to wool), between 12-18" wide
Color and weave structure is your artistic choice
Allow no more than $10 for additional parts, such as lining, straps, buckles, handle, etc if needed
Send it to your swap partner by July 31, 2009
You each have a month to then use up to 50% of the woven fabric to make your partner a bag, tote, satchel or some sort of carry-all item, and the woven fabric must be suitable for making this sort of item
Send your finished item back to the original weaver no later than August 31, 2009
The bag designer gets to keep the remaining woven cloth (because the weaver can make themselves extra for themselves before sending off the yardage)
There is a lot of creative freedom with that and yet it limits it to something that those without a lot of sewing skills can handle, too.

The weaver receiving the finished item has to post or send a picture of the finished item to share with everyone else once everything has been done.. All of us are going to be very curious as to what ideas people come up with for their finished project.

Within one week of joining, you will be sent the name of your swap partner with their email address. Please contact them as soon as possible to introduce yourself and swap addresses. If you do not hear from your partner within a week, let us know and we will designate a new partner. You’ll also be sent the questionnaire that you should send to your partner so they will have some info about you.

This is limited to the first 20 people to contact us at weaversswap@yahoo.com . This post will be updated when the 20 spots have been filled. Also, please specify if you want local (your country) or international. Also, please specify your country so we know where you are.

Please come and join in on all the fun. You get to be creative, make new friends, and get the chance to see someone create something out of your handwoven fabric. I can’t wait to see what fabric I get to play with.

I’m in! Wheee! It’s warm enough to set up the loom now (I have to weave in the backyard or edge sideways around the loom for weeks.)

I wish I could join, but the looms are already spoken for, and I don’t want to be one of those people that join and then drop out at the last minute. I look forward to the woven goodness, though!
